Airport History
Jacksonville Executive at Craig Airport  (JAXEX) History

Jacksonville Executive at Craig Airport (JAXEX) is tied to a rich history of aviation in the North Florida Region.  The airport was built by the US military as a training facility and was originally named after fallen Navy Commander James Edwin Craig, who died during the attack at Pearl Harbor. In 1946, the airport was deeded to the City of Jacksonville.

JAXEX was also the sight of the first Blue Angels performance. On June 15, 1946, Lieutenant Commander Roy Marlin "Butch" Voris led a trio of Grumman F6F-5 Hellcats, specially modified to reduce weight and painted sea blue with gold leaf trim, through their inaugural 15-minute-long performance. The Blue Angels' first public demonstration also netted the team its first trophy, which sits on display in the team's current home at NAS Pensacola.

Since that historic performance, JAXEX continues to be a catalyst for aviation and all that it means to the Jacksonville community. In 2003, JAXEX was named Florida's General Aviation Airport of the year and proudly links its rich historical past to its current role in a four airport system.  It effectively serves as a general aviation reliever airport for corporate air traffic and first class flight training facility while contributing to the economic growth of the area.
